AstraZeneca is buying the generic drug Nexium from the US pharmacy benefit manager, making it a cheaper alternative to the branded drug.
The deal comes as Pfizer, the world's biggest pharmaceutical company, is testing the new drug for stomach problems. The two are also trying out a similar drug, a newer formulation of omeprazole, in the US.
The US generic drug maker was given $3.5bn (£2.1bn) for its share in Nexium and $1.3bn (£0.1bn) for its US share, according to IMS Health. It will be generic copies of the branded drug by the end of the year.
But AstraZeneca says it is in talks with US drug regulators over the drug, which is known for being effective in treating heartburn and acid reflux.
Under the deal, AstraZeneca will be giving the company a 30-day supply of the drug. It is also expected to be able to sell the generic version of the drug for up to three years.
Pfizer, the world's biggest pharmaceutical company, is also getting a 30-day supply of Nexium. Pfizer had said that the product could be sold in the US by the end of the year.
